Stamp out Prostitution

North Charleston, SC - Illegal prostitution is nothing new according to some residents in North Charleston.

"It's just rampant, been this way for years - girls arrested 6-7-8 times," said Charles Ellis, a concerned resident.

Police are trying to curb the crime. On Friday, authorities arrested three people on prostitution charges. On Saturday a sting resulted in 16.

"We want to make sure we stay on top of it, and citizens can drive home with out seeing someone soliciting for sex," said Spencer Pryor, who is with the North Charleston Police Department.

But now, more and more would be prostitutes are moving their profession from the streets to the World Wide Web.

Authorities say websites like Craigslist (online escort/Prostitutes) and others are becoming a hotbed for prostitution. There are hundreds of listings, many here in the Charleston area.

”The internet allows them to reach more people and make arrangements that are behind the scenes," said Sheriff Al Cannon.

Last fall the Charleston County Sheriff's office arrested 35 to 40 people alleged to be involved in Craigslist prostitution. The problem however hasn't gone away. Cannon says things may not change soon due to budget and man power issues.

"It is not a high priority but when we find a level of organization we address it as best we can," he said.
